Profile of Steve Grant

Steve Grant is the 2011-12 Western Division Governor

Steve Grant has been a member of Toastmasters since July 2007. His home club is Great American Speakers (#3459) and has served as Vice President –Education and President. The Officer Corps that served with him as President guided the club to its 7th straight Presidents Distinguished award. In its short 10 year history, G.A.S. has implemented many Toastmaster processes and has successfully created a powerhouse of a club.

Over the years, Steve has had the honor to serve regional, national and international employers. In that time, he has found several management principles that dovetail with the Toastmaster product. The Theory of Throughput as propagated by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt in his management novel, The Goal, gave Steve the opportunity to see and work with people and principles that have turned the manufacturing world around. Another management approach studied by Steve has been the works of Dr. Stephen R. Covey. Some of the later works of Dr. Covey have been references to the work done by the late Robert Greenleaf and his Center for Servant Leadership. Of the ten characteristics that are identified as central to this concept of Servant Leadership, Steve feels that three are appropriate for his upcoming year as Western Division Governor: Listening, Commitment to the growth of people and Building community.

As the Area 34 Governor this past year (an area outside his home area), Steve has had the opportunity to work with club officers in providing program and assistance for a variety of clubs. He plans to put to use these skill sets, along with the club experience – in a division that is soon to see the Toastmaster International Convention.

Steve has received a BA in History, post baccalaureate study in Accounting and an MBA. His wife is a professional musician and teacher, her specialty is the Oboe. Steve has three sons, one daughter-in- law and has just returned from a visit to Ireland where his oldest son has worked for six years. The trip included London, Edinburgh & the Scottish Highlands. Hobbies included traveling, cycling, hiking, sailing, photography and genealogy.
