By Larry Goldsmith, DTM  Lt. Gov. of Education and Training

District 40 is headed to the International Convention in Orlando in August, 2012.  We invite everyone to come along, but one lucky member will be coming along for FREE!

District 40 wants to be a President’s Distinguished District and be honored at the International Convention, but we need more members, more new clubs, and more educational awards.  Your personal achievement helping us achieve our goals could win you a spot with us at the convention.  Imagine helping us carry our banner across the stage celebrating our achievements.

If District 40 exceeds its goals by 6/30/2012, we will be drawing names from all qualified entries to determine who gets to attend the convention with us for free.  If we finish our year strong, there will be multiple names drawn as part of this promotion.  You could win a prize valued at $500, $1,000 or even $1,500!

See promotional flyer for more details

Here is how you earn an entry in the promotion:

  • For each CC, ACB, ACS, ACG, CL, ALB, ALS or DTM you submit, you will earn 1 entry.
  • For each 3 new members your sponsor, as recorded by TI, you will earn 2 entries.
  • For each new club you sponsor if chartered by June 30, 2012, you earn 5 entries.

As a District we are very close to achieving our Distinguished goals and well on our way to achieving greater success.  We need to work on membership payments and new clubs.  We have several clubs that have still not paid their dues and we need those payments.  We also should be  finding new clubs for the District.

Together we can exceed our Distinguished goals and continue on to reach our level 2 or level 3 goals as part of this promotion.  It all starts with you achieving your personal goals.  Hurry and turn in your awards soon!  We hope to see you in Orlando!

District Close to Meeting Our Educational Goals

Our District is just short of our Distinguished District Educational Awards.  We have exceeded our Advanced Communicator and Leadership awards, but are still 18 Competent Communicator awards short of our goals.  With the rest of  June to go and averaging 21 CCs a month, we should finish our year in good shape.

Remember, though, our goal is to exceed our Distinguished goal and reach our stretch goals.  Then one lucky member of our District will be awarded with an Orlando trip to the International Convention!

See promotional flyer for more details

Educational Awards through May 10, 2012

Competent Communicators (CC)

The District is averaging 21 awards per month.  We are 18 awards short of our distinguished goals for the year.    We are ahead of last year’s pace by 14 awards.

Advanced Communicators (ACB, ACS, ACG)

The District is averaging 10 awards per month.  We have met our Distinguished District goals for the year.    We are behind last year’s pace by 7 awards.  We need to keep up the pace to beat last year’s totals.

Leadership Awards (CL, ALB, ALS, DTM)

The District is averaging 21 awards per month.  We have met our Distinguished District goals for the year.  We are short our Stretch goals by 12 awards.

The DCP and You

Facebook is going public. CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in his letter to prospective shareholders, “Simply put: we don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.”

That strikes a chord with me. He sounds like a Toastmaster!

Basically, this is what we’ve been saying all year: we don’t add members to get points on the DCP. We add members to build better services for all. We don’t follow the DCP to get points. We follow the DCP because it measures how well we serve others.

When we look at our anchor clubs, we see that they have several things in common: they have 20 to 30 members, they have a strong commitment to every member, they work the Toastmasters program in every detail, they have well-planned meetings with robust attendance at each, they encourage their members, and they celebrate success.

In May, every anchor club elected new officers for the coming year, and they report their officer list on-line to Toastmasters International. Their officers attend training. They added new members and replaced those who moved on. They motivated four or more members to complete a CC, and other members to complete Advanced Communicator awards and leadership awards. They participate in contests and conferences. They give to each other, they support each other, and they learn from each other.

Does that sound familiar? Of course it does. It’s the Distinguished Club Program. We have anchor clubs in every part of District 40. Members of anchor clubs know that getting points in the DCP is not the goal. The goal is to become better communicators and better leaders. The DCP is only a tool that measures the club’s  success.

As your club transitions through the change of officers in the next few weeks, consider your commitment to your club and your fellow members. Spend a few moments during a meeting talking about how you can do a better job serving one another.  Consider the benefits of becoming an anchor club. Create a plan and make the commitment. The rewards will come long before the results show up on the reports.

Need help? Ask for it. There is help at http://www.toastmasters.org  Download information and materials. Present the Successful Club Series and the Better Speaker Series to your club. In addition to educational materials, there are many experienced members throughout the district who can help you. Your Area Governor, Division Governor, and other District 40 leaders are available as well.

We celebrate your commitment and your success. Most of all, we celebrate your service to each other.

Spread the News Contest

Thanks to all who submitted news articles for the “Spread the News” Contest.  It’s great to know many clubs are writing articles about their clubs for their local newspapers and for the Success Times. Congratulations to Elaine Bailey of the Greenville Toastmasters Club #1238! Her submission took first prize and earned her a $25 gift certificate to the Toastmasters International store.  Great job, Elaine!

Dazzle Me Contest

Congratulations to all clubs that brought a poster promoting their club to the 2012 Spring Conference. Attendees had the opportunity to vote for their favorite by donating money to the “ballot boxes.”  All were encouraged to stuff the ballot box – a penny a vote – and the clubs took home the money collected to use in whatever way they decide.  Aquinas Toastmasters Club #2159 of Urbana, Ohio collected first prize with 5037 votes. Congratulations to the home club of the Lieutenant Governor Marketing!

Awards

By Kevin Vorheis, Immediate Past District Governor

How do you avoid the risk that the awards in your club are received and entered on time?

Here are two tips on entering awards, membership applications, and payments online. These are the best ways to ensure your members and club receive the credit for the awards they earned:

  1. Make sure every club officer in your club knows how to log onto club central. Since every club officer can submit awards (except their own) and membership applications, make sure they understand this important method. If they need help, have them contact Obie Williams at obren.williams2@anthem.com. Obie has trained and presented this subject at many club officer training sessions.
  2. Have a backup plan! Several times in the last four years, I’ve talked with club members who had awards to submit during the last week in June, but the VPE had the paperwork, was on vacation, and wouldn’t be back until after the June 30 deadline! Make sure the club officers have a plan to help each other when the VPE isn’t available.

As a District, we have met our CC, AC and leadership award goals for the year. Congratulations! Lets take the next step and ensure EVERY club in our District is Distinguished or better, which we all know is how success is measured in Toastmasters!

Let’s have a great finish to an OUTSTANDING YEAR, by entering each and every award!

Standing Room Only club 3456 recently celebrated 50 years. The following meeting was unusual. The attached was submitted to Toastmasters International Magazine at the suggestion of our VP of PR.

Standing Room Only Toastmasters (Club 3456) at a recent meeting celebrated the 50th anniversary of the club. District officers and former members were invited to share memories of earlier days in the club. The other major theme was a memorial to Keith Cornett, a loyal member who had stimulated interest in this milestone and was taken suddenly in death a few months before the anniversary date. His wife, Ann, attended and was surprised by the comments made about her late husband. It was obvious that from his experiences at this club and two others to which he belonged, Keith had grown in confidence and leadership skills. Standing Room Only plans to continue to grow and inspire for another 50 years.
    Two Weeks Later:
It was a beautiful evening with moderate temperature and no breeze. Members of Standing Room Only Toastmasters club gathered at their regular meeting place – the local fire station. Finding the door locked and the fire engine gone, the officers debated their options. Beside the firehouse the grassy hill looked like the perfect place for a makeshift amphitheater. Picnic blankets were spread and the meeting began only a few minutes late. There was even a flag flying across above the fire house for the traditional opening pledge.
The first meeting of the 51st year of Standing Room Only Toastmasters Club took place without a hitch. The timer made a three-sided sign with green, yellow, red. Speakers spoke over the roar of trains and passing traffic. All portions of the regular agenda were presented as usual.
Toastmasters helps its members to adjust to unanticipated situations. This was certainly a first.
